Creating a 2 month old schedule can be a big struggle, especially when your baby’s needs seem to change daily. That’s why at this age, gentle routines, and not strict schedules, can help your baby sleep better and eat more consistently.
As a mom of 3, one thing I liked about the 2 month age is that your baby is awake a little bit more, so you can interact with them. However, I also found sleep at night to be more difficult, which can cause a lot of stress for parents.
In this guide, we will review what a realistic 2 month old routine looks like, for both sleep and feeding. Having realistic expectations for your baby at this age can help relieve some of the stress new parents face. Let’s get started discussing what a 2 month old’s day and night looks like.

What to Expect From a 2 Month Old
At two months old, your baby is becoming more alert and social. They are starting to grow out of the newborn stage, which means longer awake periods. You might also notice more predictable feeding times, smiling, cooing, and increased interaction, and shorter, more consistent naps.
A strict schedule isn’t necessary at this age, but a predictable routine can be incredibly helpful. Following a loose structure often leads to easier bedtimes, more consistent naps, less fussiness, and better sleep habits in the long term. So, what does this schedule look like? Let’s go over a sample 2 month old schedule next.
Sample 2 Month Old Schedule
This sample routine is meant to be flexible. You should adjust timing based on your baby’s cues and feeding needs. The most important thing will be to focus on meeting your baby’s wake windows, which is discussed in more detail below.
It’s also important to understand that some babies prefer an earlier bedtime at this age, while others do better with a later one. Both are normal at this age. For me personally, I had 2 kids with a later bedtime (around 10pm) and 1 kid with an earlier bedtime (around 8pm). Finally, you can expect 1-3 feedings through the night.
- 7:00 AM – Wake up & feed
- 8:15 AM – Nap #1
- 9:00 AM – Wake & feed
- 10:15 AM – Nap #2
- 11:00 AM – Wake & feed
- 12:15 PM – Nap #3
- 1:15 PM – Wake & feed
- 2:30 PM – Nap #4
- 3:30 PM – Wake & feed
- 4:45 PM – Nap #5
- 5:30 PM – Wake & feed
- 6:30 PM – Calm play or bath (optional)
- 7:00 PM – Feed
- 7:30 PM – Bedtime or nap #6 (varies by baby)
- 8:00 PM – Wake up (only some babies)
- 9:30 PM – 2nd bedtime – optional feed

How Much Should a 2 Month Old Sleep?
In a 24 hour period most 2 month-olds sleep 14–17 hours total, including nighttime sleep and naps. Nighttime sleep is often a longer stretch of 3–5 hours with 1-3 night feedings. It’s not a huge chunk of sleep at a time, but at least it’s improved over a newborn schedule.
How Many Naps Does a 2 Month Old Need?
Most 2 month old babies take 4-6 naps per day. Naps are usually short, ranging from 30 to 90 minutes. Short naps are developmentally normal at this stage, so don’t stress if your baby isn’t napping for long stretches yet.
How Long Should a 2 Month Old Be Awake?
Most 2 month-olds have a wake window of 60–90 minutes at a time. Staying within this awake time helps prevent overtiredness, which can make naps and bedtime harder. During the time your baby is awake, you can implement the following in your routine:
- Feeding session
- Short playtime
- Diaper change
Watch for baby sleepy cues like staring off into space, big yawns, and fussiness. Whether you notice these sleep cues or not, try to put your baby down to sleep if they are nearing the end or have surpassed the typical wake window for this age.

Feeding Schedule for a 2 Month Old
Most 2 month-olds eat every 2.5–3 hours during the day. Aim to ensure full feeds in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings (when possible) to support longer nighttime sleep stretches.
- Breastfed babies may feed slightly more often
- Formula fed babies may go slightly longer between feeds
- Cluster feeding in the evening might happen
Tips for Creating a Successful 2 Month Old Routine
- Keep It Flexible: Your baby won’t follow the exact same schedule perfectly every day. The goal is to set a consistent schedule that is flexible based on wake windows.
- Prioritize Wake Windows: Putting your baby down before they become overtired can dramatically improve naps and nighttime sleep.
- Use a Simple Bedtime Routine: A short, predictable routine, like feeding, diaper change, and cuddles, signals that it’s time for sleep.
- Don’t Stress Short Naps: Short naps are very common at this age and should improve naturally over the next few months.
A 2 month old schedule doesn’t need to be perfect to be effective.
By following gentle wake windows, offering full feeds, and keeping a consistent daily rhythm, you’re helping your baby feel secure and well-rested. Some days will flow smoothly, while others may not—and that’s completely normal at this age.
Stay flexible, watch your baby’s cues, and adjust as needed. Over time, these small routines lay the foundation for better sleep, easier days, and more confidence as you move into the months ahead.
