Sample Newborn Twins Breastfeeding Schedule To Establish Milk Supply & Make Enough Breast Milk

Below you will find a sample breastfeeding schedule for a newborn. When your babies are newborns (up until around 6 weeks old), you will feed them on demand.

This means you could be feeding your twins at the same time or you might be nursing them at different times. Your goal during this time will be to work towards getting your twins on the same schedule.

Each of your twins will need to feed 10-12 times per day! That means there will definitely be some overlap of feedings, but don’t expect them all to be at the same time. It’s very important to understand that you should not expect your twins to be on the same schedule yet. This is just not something babies are capable of at this age.

In order to establish enough milk supply for twins offer your your breasts to both babies each time one is hungry (when possible). If one baby just fell asleep, this might not be possible. But when you can, offer our breasts to both of your babies.

If you need to increase your milk supply add in more nursing sessions or pump 15 minutes after you have finished a feeding. The reality is this is a very demanding schedule! Be gracious to yourself and do what you can.

How To Work Towards Getting Newborn Twins On The Same Schedule

The good news is there are small things you can do things to help work towards getting newborn twins on the same schedule. This includes implementing an eat, play, sleep routine and waking your twins up within 30 minutes of one another. For all the tips on what to do, check out this article on newborn twins schedules.

Things You Need for Breastfeeding Twins

I recommend the following items when breastfeeding twins. These will help you be comfortable and stay organized.

Since you will feed your twins both at the same time and separately, you will want both types of breastfeeding pillow (single and double). These pillows help you get comfortable so you can focus on a good breastfeeding position and establishing a good latch for your babies. Finally, being able to track when, for how long, and on which breast, your babies nursed will be very beneficial during the newborn stage.

3-6 Month Schedule

By 3 months old your twins should be on the same schedule. I highly recommend putting your babies on the same schedule as quickly as you can for your own sanity. This is what you can expect for a breastfeeding schedule at this age.

Sample Breastfeeding And Pumping Schedule For Twins

You might find yourself wanting to combine nursing and pumping. For me personally, I ended up mostly just pumping for my twins.

When combining breastfeeding and pumping, you will use the newborn schedule listed above. Next, replace some of the nursing sessions with pumping sessions instead. Here is a sample for what that would look like.

You might choose to pump at night, so you can sleep more and have help feeding your babies. When you do have helpers around have them feed the bottles of pumped breastmilk, so you can get a break.

When To Stop Breastfeeding Twins

Breastfeeding twins is an enormous amount of work! You can stop breastfeeding your twins whenever you want. It’s up to what you think is best for you and your family.

If you are going by what is recommended, the AAP recommends exclusively breastfeeding for the first 6 months. However, this just might not realistic for you. Any amount you provide is beneficial for your kids.

I mentioned before that I pumped for my twins, and after 11 weeks I just couldn’t do it anymore. I didn’t have help at home, and I decided it was better for my mental health to switch to formula at that time.

My personal opinion would be to do your best to feed your twins as much breastmilk as you can. But, if you are stressed and exhausted and missing out on enjoying this precious time in their life, then it might not be worth it anymore.

Use these sample breastfeeding twins schedules for help making enough milk in order to successfully breastfeed your twin babies.
