Exclusive Pumping Must Haves List
The list below covers the items you will need for pumping. They DO NOT include things you will need for bottle feeding your baby like burp cloths or the correct bottle nipple size.
For those items, sign up for these printable pregnancy checklists that include a baby registry list. With that said, let’s get started on the list of exclusive pumping must haves for new moms.
1 – Double Electric Breast Pump or Hospital Grade Pump
The good news is that it’s very likely your insurance will pay for your pump! The absolute best pump is a hospital grade pump, but for those you would have to rent them and insurance only covers the rental cost for a few weeks.
Most likely your best option is to get a high quality double electric breast pump. Personally, I used a Medela pump, which I highly recommend. The other pumps that are very much loved by moms are the Spectra S1 and Spectra S2.
2 – Bottles To Pump Directly Into
I highly recommend getting bottles that you can pump directly into. Huge bonus if your baby will also drink from them. I had success using the Medela bottles. If your baby prefers different bottles, you most likely can buy connectors (if needed) so you can pump directly into them.
3 – Breast Pads
I would get a set of reusable pads and a box of disposable breast pads. This gives you the option to use either one depending on your needs at the time. For example, when you go out, it might be more convenient to use disposable pads.
4 – Hands-Free Pumping Bra
Would you rather have to hold each flange to your breast while you pump or have something that will do it for you? A hands-free pumping bra will give you the use of your hands while your pumping. This is extremely useful for any pumping setup adjustments you need to make once pumping as commenced and for using your entertainment (see below) while your pumping.
5 – Wire-Free Bras
You need comfortable, wire-free bras to wear so that your milk supply is not negatively impacted. A good option are nursing bras, especially if want to pump without removing your bra. However, do keep in mind you might need to remove your bra if you are using a hands-free pumping bra.
I had the best luck with comfortable and easy-to-use nursing bras from Target. Click here to check out Target’s selection (scroll down a little bit to see the options).
6 – Lanolin or Nipple Cream
Pumping many times throughout the day can lead to nipple soreness and irritation. Using lanolin or nipple cream will help relieve this pain. One way to help avoid chafing and peeled skin is ensuring your flanges are centered on your nipples and your nipples are not touching the flanges throughout the entire pumping procedure.
7 – Extra Set of Pump Parts
Pump parts need to be replaced on a regular schedule. But additionally, small parts could easily be lost or you could have a part that gets damaged. Having replacement parts on hand removes any stress over having to miss pumping sessions because you don’t have a part that you need.
8 – Breastmilk Storage Bags
If you are lucky enough to have extra breastmilk, you can put it in storage bags and freeze it for down the road when you might need it for your baby. It’s always a good idea to have a few extra bags in the freezer. For a quick reference guide on breastmilk storage guidelines check out this printable chart.
9 – Entertainment
As an exclusive pumper, your pumping schedule for a newborn will be pretty intense with about 8 pumps per day. You will want to have access to a tablet, your phone, or a book at your pumping station in order to help pass the time.
10 – Wash Bin & Drying Rack
At some point during in a 24-hour period you will need to wash your pump parts. Often this can be accomplished while washing bottles as well. You can put your used pump parts in the refrigerator and then wash them at the end of the day with bottles to save time.
When you wash these parts it’s useful to have a wash bin that you can put in the sink with hot, soapy water. A separate drying rack for bottles and pump parts is very useful too.

Optional Exclusive Pumping Items
Now that we have reviewed the list of pumping must haves, there are also a few optional items you may want. As an exclusively pumping mom, you might want to also invest in the items listed below, however they are not absolutely necessary.
- Wearable Breast Pump – although an added expense, this can help moms produce even more milk while they are busy doing other things.
- Breastmilk Bottle Cooler – convenient for keeping breastmilk cold when you are on the go.
- Pumping Flange Lubricant – reduces friction and irritation to your skin while pumping.
